Homemade Anise Moonshine Recipe
This recipe for anise moonshine was popular a long time ago. In fact, it dates back to the times when Peter the Great was the ruler of the Russian Empire. Legend has it, the first emperor to unite the Russian Empire preferred this drink to any other.
Making anise moonshine is actually a fairly simple endeavor. You’ll need to add some anise seeds to a twice-distilled moonshine. To make the infusion more fragrant, crush the seeds before adding them to the moonshine. If there’s no moonshine available, it can be replaced with vodka. However, in this case, you should make sure it’s top-notch.
Infuse the anise moonshine mixture for at least 4 weeks in a cool place. That time period will be enough for the drink to obtain spicy aroma and taste. Filter the moonshine, dilute it with water and distill.
You can dilute it with water once again because it will turn out quite strong.
Anise Moonshine with Dill Seeds
This anise moonshine turns out very mild, and it’s perfect to sip neat, despite its strength. It takes just over two months to make, but its taste is absolutely worth it.
Ingredients:
- Anise seeds — 300 grams
- Dill seeds — 150 grams
- Moonshine or vodka — 10 liters
- Water — 5 liters
- Lemons — 1.5 kilo
- Ginger root — 20 grams
Mix the anise and dill seeds and put them in a fermentation vessel—a large enamel pot, jar or milk churn. Pour the seeds over with moonshine or vodka and leave the mixture in a cool place for 4 weeks. Filter the anise and dill infusion, add water, and distill.
Add zest from one kilo of lemons and grated ginger to the clarified moonshine.
Mix the drink, close the lid, and leave it in a cool place for 5-6 weeks. The longer it infuses, the more fragrant the outcome will be.
Quick Anise Moonshine
This anise moonshine can be prepared in just 3 days. You’ll need 15 liters of clarified moonshine or vodka and 1-2 kilos of anise.
To make this “quick moonshine” spices have to be crushed up, put in the fermentation vessel and poured over with 5 liters of moonshine. Put the mixture in a dark place for 3 days, then add the remaining moonshine and distill. If you use vodka instead of moonshine then infuse the drink for 4-5 days or a bit longer.
There are plenty of ways to make anise moonshine but all of them are built upon the same principle. That’s why you can experiment without hesitation and add any spices and herbs you want (be it lemon peel, coriander, badian or fennel).
